Death and the Empress of the Galaxy by barbarasobczynska Death and the Empress of the Galaxy by barbarasobczynska
a kind of a bit darker and somewhat sci-fi twist on a classic H. Ch. Andersen's fairy tale "Nightingale"
the picture was created for :icongordonwildhurst: who was so kind to give me a lot of freedom when it comes to the choice of topic of the commission, so I deeply hope he's going to like what I came up with :fingerscrossed:, (I must say the scan doesn't unfortunately do justice to the colours and details of the original picture, they look much more impressive in person)

This reminds me of "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli. I think I like this better though! There's so much amazing art that comes out of Poland. Na zdrowie!

Also, one thing I noticed in small view is just how 3D Death really looks. Amazing! If I can make one tiny nitpick, the skin could be a bit smoother. Maybe incorporate some gouache? It seems the paper texture is a bit overpowering there. But it's really not important.

Well heck, if the scan doesn't do it justice it must be mindblowing. Because as I see it here, it's amazing. I particularly like the intricate metal decoration of the bed, and the skulls of course. Awesome skulls never hurt.
I now have an urge to read Andersen's stories again. Thank you for reminding me about them. I'm really curious about this Empress of the Galaxy twist.

I love this - and I don't know if anybody else has noticed, but in the cage there is a shadow of a cockatoo. I love how you portrayed the empress - though draped in so much gold and so many riches, she is still as vulnerable as a fragile butterfly against death

Beautiful!
Death lurking over the bed instead of standing by the bed like in upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… is an even better, sinister way of telling how close "he" is!
What comes to my mind looking at the beauty, easily crushable by this personified death, this could be how Hans Christian Andersen had the "Nightingale" in mind.
Putting her in the role of the emperor is near genius of you because it swaps roles and by doing so, shows exactly what the original tried to show:
The vulnerability of the Emperor and the beauty of the sin, Andersen got inspired by, depicted at once, by just one simple change. Impressive!:wow:
I know I repeat myself but I also like how "Death" is invading the privacy of the bed by crossing the imaginary "wall" of her bed. Looking at her through the bed poles. Showing how nothing can stop "him"...
Also sweet how the one cockatoo in the front seemingly wants to defend her...:D
5/5

haha a puzzle, you say, why thank you, I'll take it as a compliment :D, btw, you made me think... :plotting: how come I've never designed a puzzle illustration?!;) heh, my dad is often making fun of me saying I would be way better off drawing security features of (fake) banknotes instead of drawing those tiny intricate ornaments on my pictures ;)

haha. I really did mean that as a compliment. Every corner of the illustration has so much attention and detail.

I do a lot of puzzles, and always rage about how inappropriate the illustrations are for puzzles. THIS on the other hand would work great.

The details you draw really are amazingly intricate. It's impressive.
